He most recently served as CEO of SUPERVALU, the second largest food retailer in the U. S. Prior to that, he was the CEO of Americas at Wal-Mart International and served on the Executive Committee at Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Since 2012, Herkert has been an independent consultant in the grocery and CPG industries.
